Short Film Poster Deconstruction, (film name: Burn After Reading)
Picture of the poster

Overall design
The overall design is in dark red, white, black and yellow. This poster looks like James Bond movie of 60s so the most likely audience age this film is made for is from 25 to 55. You should feel that this movie will be funny, because of a man with a binocular on the right side and to make it look ironic a hand with a gun sticking out.
This poster conveys/ gives a hint about genre by having two shaded figures on the bottom. We see that one of those figures looks somewhere with binocular so we think about spies, and other figure holds the gun in his/her hands (we do not know yet) so we think in the beginning that this is a spy drama probably with some action elements. The genre audience would think of is Action.
This poster is simple promotional of the actual film, as there are no photos of actors or shots from the actual movie. In this case this is more sort of artistic work/comment on the film as those two figures explain to us what this film might be about. This whole poster is made on Photoshop, and the shapes of people on the bottom could actually be the main characters, but edited on the Photoshop.
The most notisable element on this poster is the name of the film, which is yellow writing in the middle. The second what you can see on the poster are names of main actors in the film. Next goes the hint of the genre of the film which is in this case two figures on the bottom of the poster. The reason why film name and main actors’ names are most noticeable is because name of the film is quite provoking to find out about it. Actors are listed in the same way; we can see them quite well due to the size of the font. We have this film advertised by actors in it and the name of the film.
This poster concentrates on one USP I would say, it tells us what actors will play main roles; it means that author wants people to buy this film because of actors in it. The reason I think that here is only this USP is that names of the artists are written in the biggest font on the poster and they are listed from the top to the bottom/from what we see first to what we see last.
Text
The text we see on this poster is names of the actors, name of the film, name of author/director of the film and some credits on the bottom of the poster. The other extra information/credits are in the bottom of the poster.
The font/style of the writing reminds me of a film ‘Pink Panther’ which is some kind of a spy criminal comedy. This poster writing and theme looks exactly the same due to people on the bottom and the actual font style. The color of the background is quite dark and the color of fonts is contrast to it. So the contrast color brings our attention in, and TA understands it as a main part of the poster and film.
The way this poster conveyed the narrative of the film is by stereotype, as some people would associate this film to ‘Pink Panther’ film; this will give approximate ideas on what is it going to be about. The other aspect which conveys the genre/meaning of the film is small figures on the bottom of the screen, we look and those characters, see a gun, a binocular and think of spies which remind us again of ‘Pink Panther’ and we know if we go into this group of people who likes this genre.
The order of importance on this poster goes from top to bottom only. As we look from the top we see actors’ names, film name and director/creator then people and then some extra information.
Graphic and photography
The graphic is on this poster is quite simple; there are two silhouettes and just a dark red background. The fonts going to the silhouettes as well as I look more like a picture rather than actual text.
The effects which I can see are that people on the back are in the middle of some action; one is watching and the other one is about to shot someone. Those actions are there to show what this film is going to be about.
The colors used in this poster are in contrast to each other. The reason to male them in contrast to each other is to layout most important and less important parts in the poster.
The photo or scene on this poster is probably was inspired by the film. This scene represents the scene in the film or the whole point of film.
The miss-en-scene on this poster is probably the most important thing of the whole picture. As those two items that people have represent two main idea of the film i.e. shooting and spying. Those items are as I mentioned before; binocular and a gun.
Marketing
This poster does inspire me to go and watch this film as it has quite designing picture with silhouettes at the bottom. Also overall style of the poster looks comic, and as I like watching comedies I would go and watch this movie.
This poster does catch my attention, and the way it does it as I mentioned before was through the colors of the poster. Also the size of fonts will be quite important in attracting people.
This poster does give me enough information of what is this film about by the stereotypes as that is comedy more likely to have colorful poster and that only spy movies will include the binoculars and guns. This poster gives information about actors playing in it as well which is could be quite important as there is some groups of people who would like to look at the actors in the first place.
