A2 Short Film Script
First scene (Morning)
‘Guy’
Sunrise
(Sun goes up fast) and soundtrack plays at the same time (the sound track will have the radio sound as this music would be on the radio). Soundtrack will be calm to represent morning and the beginning of the day and film itself. Music would be ‘Ska’ or reggae (any calm music) as to represent sun in the morning. To film in the sunny weather would be important.
In bed (room)
As there is only one room in place where the guy will live the whole bedroom scene will be happening in one room.
Tracking shot along the table – stops on funny watch which has half past eleven on them (or something else). Clock making noise (wake up alarm) – a hand smashes it up – the same time we have a shot of the explosion, clock turns off.
Shot with hands on the head of the guy – to represent that he did not want to wake up.
Next part is when ‘guy’ gets out of the bad, we see his hands (only) but from the side going to bathroom, carries on by editing into facial shot when we can see his hands from above (point of view shot). Hands pour water in them selves and than water goes on camera as to probably represent man’s power, as men pours water in his hands as he would pour energy in them and than gives this power to his face. As sometimes we see in shaving gel advertisements. Reason to this is to represent and stereotype men’s side in the film.
Next shot we will see hands working on dressing man up, we see different shots of hand’s manipulations edited together in fast motion, i.e. pulling up socks, putting on a shirt and packing his stuff for coming up lessons.
Next shot is when the guy opens the door we have a close up from different angles on door handle and his hand in particular.
In school
In this part we will see this guy trying to make up with a girl.
First shot – guy closes the door of his room – (we have a close up on the handle and guy’s arm in particular.)
Later we see a shot of him walking on the street, – we see only his arm right or left for a short period of time just to represent that guy has a way to go.
In school scene
Music is still the same.
We have shots of guy sitting on the lessons, in the corridors.
Shots of a guy putting up hands to ask something and writing something on the board, reading point of view shot etc.
As to represent/stereotype the man’s behaviour as being untidy and naughty I will, have some shots when the guy takes a pen from a teacher – than first shot we have the guy taking the pen and the next shot we have him giving the pen back with a eaten end of it.
There will be some shots which will represent the men’s behaviour.
Also through out the day guy will text to the girl, his hand movements will be nervous as to represent the mood.
Also scene with lunch will be filmed. We will see point view shot from the top on the food, the guy will not finish food he will leave some of it and probably will use just a fork or something like that.
Evening
In the evening music will change to something more energetic like dub step or something more calm as house or trance, as both varieties of styles remind of evening. (In the way of clubbing)
Guy is still texting a girl… (to make the whole scene more interesting we will not see what exactly characters are texting to each other)
In the second part we will see the guy going back into the house. (on the way back he might kick some rubbish on the floor or do something else)
Guy will wear new clothes (change back from the uniform).
A certain things will happen; – guy will check ‘facebook’, throw his clothes on the chair etc. The part with throwing the clothes on the chair is quite important as it will represent him as a quite disorganised person.
One of the next shoots will contain him texting the girl again. To represent that he is really interested in that girl a lot girl will text him while he is changing, at the time the guy will be interrupted but instead of checking the phone later he will get to it immediately (showing his impatience to the audience.)
Second part of the film
We will see the guy coming out of the house to go to library for doing his homework.
Obviously we will not see him working at all, first couple of shots we will see him typing and giving the impression that he is having a hard work, but the on coming shots we will have a camera shot moving onto the screen to disrobe the guy.
The other part of wasting time in library will be when the guy will be texting his girlfriend again and we will see the shot from the side which will include pen and all other stuff on the table and him writing the message under the table.
After that he will go to supper… in supper time we will see him eating. (taking the food seeing him actually eating it and than we will see him taking the tray away and getting out of the dining hall)
In the scenes when guy is going into the dining hall we will have some shots him greeting other people in the dining hall, of course without seeing their faces.
(In this case girl will do the same thing i.e. hugging/greeting people in dining hall) this is one of those things in what girl and the guy will do not the opposite thing.
Next part will be the actual date of those two people we will see each one of them walking at the place decided. Guy’s hands will be filmed from the side rubbing the side of his legs/jeans. The girl will walk and we will see her hands in her mouth, she will be biting her nails because she is nervous.
Next scene is guy walking and we see from the side way which will change into the shot from the back. Camera will follow the guy’s hand for some time until the girl’s hand grabs it (camera than stops). Two people are carrying walking towards until we see their faces that they turn around.
After they turn around we see the final part of the film.
Ending of the film
There is only one bit which will be the same is the ending: there will be two endings in the film. First will be when guy and the girl will take each other hands and turn around on camera one by one and smile in a friendly way, (so that we think that those two people are naive and kind). The other end is when the turn around one by one, but their faces will have some kind of sarcastic sign, in other words they will look like they were playing the game and each one of them will have a face that they won each other. But as the viewer we will see that they are nave by the fact that they both think the same and do not realise it.
Until the end of the film we have funny music… in the middle of the film we have a shoot on the street lamp switching on and then have some dub step music playing….
The begging of the film goes quite relaxed and funny other half
‘Girl’
Morning
Girl wakes up from the alarm clock and switches it off neatly, not banging the clock like guy is doing.
Later on she goes inside the bath room but instead seeing her pouring water in her hands we see her brushing her hair (close up from the side).
There will be some shots of girl making her nails.
We will see the girl opening the wardrobe taking some clothes out.
There will be quite a lot of similar shots. (Ones with characters walking will be the same).
The whole film girl will do everything opposite the guy so there is a balance in the film and it is more interesting to watch it.
A2 Short Film Survay Summary
Summary
After I have completed all deconstructions of real media work I created a questionnaire for my future film, magazine review page and poster. This information is vital as on this primary research I will create the whole film and other supporting bits of work.
First question was about gender, by fact there are more female than male in the world, but in this case I have asked this question within my media studies group and there are more female students. I would have to apply some secondary research on this question. This states that there is larger proportion of female but not as much as on questionnaire.
The same happened to my second question about age of the people I asked. As this questionnaire was within my media studies group almost all people who answered are in the same age as me. The only exception here is my teacher who is between thirty and forty five. In this case it is impossible to use secondary data, so I would have to use the one which is there.
According to my questionnaire, most people would prefer to watch comedy, drama and crime & Gangster, and so I can say that idea of my film lying within the most selected genres in the questionnaire.
I also asked people whether they read film magazines. The answer was positive almost eighty percent of asked said that they do read film magazines. Therefore I would have to make sure that there is enough information/promotion for my film, or at least magazine contains my film poster.
Most people do watch television, on question ‘whether you watch television?’; one hundred percent mentioned yes.
The most demanded shop to buy magazines in is HMV (UK based), therefore posters in HMVs stores should be placed. As when potential audience will see poster they would be probably interested to read the review page for that, and as a consequence will end up buying magazine which has information about my short film.
Most people mentioned that they would rather prefer to have physical film library; i.e. people would not like to buy films in computer format without CD. Therefore it would be reasonable to place on each DVD/CD product promotion about the film, as people will prefer to buy/rent DVDs rather than downloading a digital copy.
Next question was quite similar to the one above. I asked if my potential audience would like to buy film from any legal online websites. The answer was no, no one would like to buy film from the internet sources, therefore I will not be putting film poster on those websites.
Most of the people I asked prefer to watch films on DVD’s and television. The third closest option was Blue Ray, I find it vital to mention because even though it takes only third place in my question answers, but I should take in consideration that Blue Ray is a new technology, which is not developed enough. As an example when DVDs came out more people would have steel buy VHS tapes, but in time VHSs went out of production. I will have to place my film poster or any other kind of media promotion on DVDs as it is the current source where films are recorded. Another option I will have to take into the consideration is that people also watch television, so my film promotion should be in appropriate time i.e. when my target audience watching television.
People go to cinema once a week or once a month, so it is quite difficult to decide what time should I place film poster in the cinema, therefore I would have to make sure that my advertisement i.e. poster would be shown when my targeted audience is in cinema. Also when there is a wrong time for advertisement in terms of avoiding money wastages some posters could be placed outside the cinemas or where I will not get charged for placing them.
There is no big difference in ‘for’ and ‘against’ watching films online. There are more people watching them online and quite a decant amount of those who not. As there are a slight amount of online watchers I should consider the fact that those websites should have my posters especially in pages of genre my film goes in. there are about fifty seven percent for and forty against. Websites which you can stream films on: www.youtube.com, www.play4film.com, www.joost.com.
Most of the people I asked do prefer watching trailers online before they decide to watch the actual film; therefore if film trailer would be created for my film I would hade to place it on www.youtube.com or such as.
People watch films in evenings. This relates to home screening, cinema, online streaming and television.
Most of people watch films only once or twice a week, this includes films online, television, private viewing and going to cinema. Apparently those watching times are Friday, Saturday and Sunday so I would like to place advertisement of all sorts I have listed above in earlier paragraphs the certain time for it.
Most people do pay attention to film posters. There are about eighty four present stated that. So poster is very vital in creating piece of media such as film, poster will be the ‘face’ of it, and it is very important to have this face good enough to attract targeted audience.
Next question was very much related to one above; I asked people where they are most likely to pay attention to the posters of the film. Most common place is in underground trains and stations second are buses and third are shops. Those are quite useful to know as I would know where my potential viewers will look at film posters.
According to answers of people, the most likely time for them to be in cinemas is weekends, and so I should take that into considerations, – advertisement should be showed in cinemas on weekends, and if it is television especially in the evenings.
The word of mouth seems to the vital aspect in creating a piece of media. about seventy percent of asked people find out about new films from friends and just thirty percent from television, those are only two options, I have had left.
More people do not like to read reviews of films in the magazines, but there still about forty two percent who would like to read magazine reviews. I should be aware of the fact that there are a decent amount of people who actually do read the reviews; therefore my film review should be attractive enough. Even though that in real media it is not going to be me writing the magazine reviews. I should be considering the fact that people who have read the film review might not like it and as a consequence their ‘word of mouth’ to their friends will be unsatisfactory for me.
Most of people still not affected by the film review and still will have a will to watch the film. There are some people who will not watch film after a bad review, and in this case the quality of the actual video will be vital as to influence film review writers.
There are about seventy five percent of people do watch short film, which makes my future work in demand already. About twenty five of asked people do not watch short films.
About eighty five percent of asked people do watch advertisement before the film starts (incase of DVD private viewing, therefore trailer or any other sort of advertisement should be on the DVD; especially in the same genre as my film.
Almost all people I asked will buy DVD/film it had a freebie on it, such as ticket to any life performances or a national lottery ticket.
Besides people who are finding out about films from friends or television, there are some people who are actively searching about films online. This means that I would have to place advertisement of my films on and searching websites such as www.google.co.uk of www.yahoo.com.
There are quite a lot of people who using www.facebook.com or www.myspace.com therefore might be useful to take those into consideration, also I could make a groups dedicated to my short film, which will be free for me and quite a useful promotion for my film.
All people who use social networking websites are watching videos on them. Due to this fact I will be able to upload my short film there for free so people can watch them and leave comments which will eventually create a word of mouth, which is either good or bad reputation.
Short Film Poster Deconstruction, (film name: Burn After Reading)
Picture of the poster

Overall design
The overall design is in dark red, white, black and yellow. This poster looks like James Bond movie of 60s so the most likely audience age this film is made for is from 25 to 55. You should feel that this movie will be funny, because of a man with a binocular on the right side and to make it look ironic a hand with a gun sticking out.
This poster conveys/ gives a hint about genre by having two shaded figures on the bottom. We see that one of those figures looks somewhere with binocular so we think about spies, and other figure holds the gun in his/her hands (we do not know yet) so we think in the beginning that this is a spy drama probably with some action elements. The genre audience would think of is Action.
This poster is simple promotional of the actual film, as there are no photos of actors or shots from the actual movie. In this case this is more sort of artistic work/comment on the film as those two figures explain to us what this film might be about. This whole poster is made on Photoshop, and the shapes of people on the bottom could actually be the main characters, but edited on the Photoshop.
The most notisable element on this poster is the name of the film, which is yellow writing in the middle. The second what you can see on the poster are names of main actors in the film. Next goes the hint of the genre of the film which is in this case two figures on the bottom of the poster. The reason why film name and main actors’ names are most noticeable is because name of the film is quite provoking to find out about it. Actors are listed in the same way; we can see them quite well due to the size of the font. We have this film advertised by actors in it and the name of the film.
This poster concentrates on one USP I would say, it tells us what actors will play main roles; it means that author wants people to buy this film because of actors in it. The reason I think that here is only this USP is that names of the artists are written in the biggest font on the poster and they are listed from the top to the bottom/from what we see first to what we see last.
Text
The text we see on this poster is names of the actors, name of the film, name of author/director of the film and some credits on the bottom of the poster. The other extra information/credits are in the bottom of the poster.
The font/style of the writing reminds me of a film ‘Pink Panther’ which is some kind of a spy criminal comedy. This poster writing and theme looks exactly the same due to people on the bottom and the actual font style. The color of the background is quite dark and the color of fonts is contrast to it. So the contrast color brings our attention in, and TA understands it as a main part of the poster and film.
The way this poster conveyed the narrative of the film is by stereotype, as some people would associate this film to ‘Pink Panther’ film; this will give approximate ideas on what is it going to be about. The other aspect which conveys the genre/meaning of the film is small figures on the bottom of the screen, we look and those characters, see a gun, a binocular and think of spies which remind us again of ‘Pink Panther’ and we know if we go into this group of people who likes this genre.
The order of importance on this poster goes from top to bottom only. As we look from the top we see actors’ names, film name and director/creator then people and then some extra information.
Graphic and photography
The graphic is on this poster is quite simple; there are two silhouettes and just a dark red background. The fonts going to the silhouettes as well as I look more like a picture rather than actual text.
The effects which I can see are that people on the back are in the middle of some action; one is watching and the other one is about to shot someone. Those actions are there to show what this film is going to be about.
The colors used in this poster are in contrast to each other. The reason to male them in contrast to each other is to layout most important and less important parts in the poster.
The photo or scene on this poster is probably was inspired by the film. This scene represents the scene in the film or the whole point of film.
The miss-en-scene on this poster is probably the most important thing of the whole picture. As those two items that people have represent two main idea of the film i.e. shooting and spying. Those items are as I mentioned before; binocular and a gun.
Marketing
This poster does inspire me to go and watch this film as it has quite designing picture with silhouettes at the bottom. Also overall style of the poster looks comic, and as I like watching comedies I would go and watch this movie.
This poster does catch my attention, and the way it does it as I mentioned before was through the colors of the poster. Also the size of fonts will be quite important in attracting people.
This poster does give me enough information of what is this film about by the stereotypes as that is comedy more likely to have colorful poster and that only spy movies will include the binoculars and guns. This poster gives information about actors playing in it as well which is could be quite important as there is some groups of people who would like to look at the actors in the first place.
Short Film Review Page Deconstruction, (magazine name: Total Film)
Photo of review page

The magazine name: ‘Total Film’
Date of issue of the magazine: ’Summer 2007’
Film reviewed: ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’
General design and composition
The orientation of the whole page here is landscape, which takes two pages. The image placed on the right page and text with small helping image on the left.
There are three columns of texts altogether. The column texts are placed on the left side vertically and in some places divided by helping photos and kickers.
The overall color scheme is black, red and white. The text in this case is black, white is the overall background and we can see sometimes red and yellow writings in some places (probably to attract attention on the page).
Text elements
The main headline of the page is ‘screen-new movies on order of merit’, after this heading of the page we can see the name of the film which this page is about. Kicker in this case would be small red circle which has writing (movie of the month). This will attract people to read film review, when they turn page. There are also two pull quotes in the text. There are two side bars on the page. One and the most visible side bar on the right page with photos of other films and with some writings about them. The second sidebar is on the bottom right side of left page which starts with word ‘In short ’. Text becomes bold in some points of the texts; it meant be made that way to made order of the text. We can see when we should start to read side bars or the actual review of the film. The fonts of texts are a bit different in different sections of writings; for example words are not only changed to the ‘italic’ style of writing but also text fonts being changed. The head lines are in the other font style than main text even though it has different size. The sizes and fonts of texts made like that for reason, so page does not look plain and that all texts are actually divided between each other. Also the reason for different fonts and sizes could be order in which creators wanted people to look at the whole text within the order, from biggest to smallest. The order in which people would look at this page would be: headline of the page, in this case it is name of the section of the magazine. The second that we can see is comment of the name of the magazine section. Next that people would see is name of the film which will be observed. The next thing which brings out attention is text and what is related to it. First we see in the text is pull quote which is coloured red and does not really has any writings and it has a graph. The reason why this pull quote is the most noticeable is that graph of how interesting this film was rated would push people to read this text. Second that we can see in the text is pull quote coloured yellow, white and black; it is not as bright as first one because it meant to be less important than first ‘red’ pull quote. It is still visible because of its yellow colour fonts. A drop cap in this text would be the red circle, as when you look at the beginning of the text you would first look at the red pull quote and than at the text. Other type of pull quote in the text is column on the bottom right side of the left page, it seems to be quite important for me because bold font style used.
All bits/elements on the double page are placed straight, and it does not create or reflect any genre of film by being printed that way. Styles of fonts for all writings are quite ordinary, helping images are without any Photoshop editing so it does not look like particular style/genre of film, like (gothic or comedy).
The specific colours of pull quotes were chosen on purpose, red is the most seeable colour on the page; we can see that there are quite a few things coloured red, we understand straight away that it is important after we read it. The meaning of the writing which is written in red should be positive for reader so after reader reads it he/she would want to read the rest of the text. Rating of the film is coloured red as well, as it could be the factor to reader to read the whole article. Pull quote with yellow bits is less important we can understand that because it coloured less recognizable colours; which is black and a bit of non-bright yellow.
Text on the whole page is interrupted with pull quotes, dropcaps. Text is divided onto three parts to make it read easily pull quotes and dropcaps are placed in the middle of the text to make text look more interactive, and make it look more interesting. If review pages would not have any pull quotes or other decorative bits of texts audience would think of it as boring, as people read magazines for fun and wants to be entertained by the magazine.
Yes the quote on the left page where it says: ‘Pirates of Caribbean: At World’s End’. The actual name of the film is ‘Pirates of Caribbean’ and the quote ‘At World’s End’ was added by the publisher. The reason for this could be that the actual scene in the film involves an end of something in the film. So after audience reads the quote thinks that there is something going to happen. Also just under the main quote of the film we have a smaller one about the main hero, which brings to us the USP which is the main actor. The quote says: ‘Captain Jack delivers spectacle. And talk. Lot of talk…’ for this quote we have a supporting image on the right page with a photo of the main actor.
Images
There are quite a lot of pictures on the page, firs picture is the main one and it takes the whole right page. The orientation if the photo is vertical. Picture is related to the article as we see the main hero which was described in the quote. There are some other pictures on the bottom right side of the right page with images of other different film followed with quotes. The name f the column with photos and writings is: ‘see this if you liked’. This can give a thought to the reader that if I did like this review of film I should certainly go for the films listed there.
There are no particular style of the picture, as this supposes to be a screenshot so people actually can see how this film would look like if they watch it, also the overall style of the magazine is quite simple as if magazine would be in a particular style; only a particular reader group would read it. This magazine is made in quite simple style so it is not concentrating on the particular group of people and can be approachable to everyone.
Miss-en-scene on this picture is in the theme of the film. On the picture we can see a middle shot on the main hero who has got the appropriate clothes for the pirates on, as the whole film is about pirates. The other reason why this photo was chosen for this article is that it represents the clothes/idea of the film and it shows the USP in the same time.
The relation between photo and main article is that we have writing/quote ‘captain Jack delivers spectacle. And talk. Lots of talk’ from this we can understand that Captain Jack talks a lot and like causing problems and the supporting image for this on the right page; we see that someone is holding Captain Jack on the neck.
The caption on the main photo is a phrase: ‘Johnny was a bit worried when Chow went in for a kiss’ this might be a very brief explanation of what is happening on the picture. The other small pictures on the bottom right side of the same page do not have any captions for each one, there is only one big caption which says: ‘see if you liked’.
Graphic furniture
There is not much graphic furniture. First one is the black line on top of the pages; this line has some kind of drawn circle on the left top side of the left page and this circle carries on through two pages and this black line has page numbers of other main film articles. Other graphic furniture is stars which are placed between the lines in the text; it is there with explanation of how many stars for what and what is good and what is rubbish. The stars are places under the main heading on the left page. The other graphic furniture we can see is page number and website of the magazine you can see it on the right bottom of the right page. The last graphic furniture is a small red circle with drawn yellow computer mouse on it with internet link with it. The last graphic furniture is placed just under the pictures of other films.
There are no logos of magazine on the actual page but there is website written with page number. We can certainly see the style of the magazine; it is represented by using grayish colours and limited colour scheme.
Tone and register
The tone of the writing is informal because narrator of the text appeals to us/readers. Text is written for people aged between twenty to fifty, as text is not too informal which would not suite elder audience and text is not too formal which will suit more young audience. The text is funny in some ways, sarcastic addressed to the main hero. Text is not made in formal or sophisticated way. It is also not irreverent as the narrator does not try to insult the main hero. The whole text is made in the way to appeal to the reader and interest him in the text.
The thrust in the film is made on all aspects, those are: narrative, actors and USP. Narrator was mixing all of those aspects in the text without any order. Narrator was describing that film could not be good enough for home preview because of too much shooting. The actors as the narrator says talk too much, there is length of conversation and less quality of it. The unique selling point in this film would be the fact that this is another series of the trilogy, and as the other parts were attractive the other series would be reasonable to watch.
Short Film Poster Deconstruction, (film name: way we go)
Picture of the poster

Overall design
The overall design of this film poster is some kind of cartoonish. The whole background is made by using digital facilities; such as Photoshop. Young people are almost not changed except they are in black and white; their clothes are also had been worked on. When I looked at this picture I felt like this film is comedy or melodrama and the audience which would likely to be here is 15 to 20 years old and probably women, the age could be even older as this poster has people aged 20 to 35 placed on it.
The way it appeals to TA as I mentioned is: by having unreal structure of the background i.e. it looks like cartoon. Also this film will be most likely about love, so we have a men and woman who are probably in love, and probably main characters.
The way this poster conveys the genre of this film is that people are smiling on the photo, which means that film is not going to be about horror or action. For action this poster would look bright and energetic and for horror it would look dark and probably with some blood placed on it. This poster also gives idea about narrative in the same way.
This poster combines in itself simple promotional of the actors and artistic comment on the film. On the front we see two people/actors which are in love (depends on the narrative) and have very artistic background quite difficult to make I guess.
The most noticeable element on this poster is writing ‘away we go’ which in this case probably is the name of the film. The other noticeable thing it two people behind the writing because they are quite bright. It made that way on purpose to show what this film is and to bright the actors so potential audience might judge and stereotype film to them selves though it. Also advertise actors, as someone could buy this film because of favourite actors.
The poster concentrates more on name of the film, because we see the name of the film first. The similar idea might been represented in the past and the film concentrates on remaking this idea and to make people interested in it they have placed big lettering in the front rather than above the picture of people or under.
Text
I was mentioned before; the most sealable part on this poster is front main writing which is the name as well. The next thing we can see are names of artists who is on the front above the name of the film, we also can see the sign with name of writer and it could be a special promotion to him/her, which is represented to us as important as names of actors. The other thing we see is: name of the director of the film which seems to be not as important as actors and writers. Finally the last thing we see is credits of the film which is placed in no-bright colour on the bottom part of the screen, between legs of actors. It is done that way for two reasons as I think; first is that it would disturb the whole background which is meant to be see able and the second reason is that it is not really important as film or actors’ names.
The font and colour of the front writing is gives meaning to the audience of comedy as it is written in quite funny and happy way. The same thing could be related to genre that fonts are representing it through funny and happy way.
All writings are laid out straight, i.e. they are not in any sort of angle. The order is: first is name of the film second are names of writer and actors. Fourth are film director’s name/information and the last are scripts.
Graphic/photography
Graphic in this poster is everything, i.e. there is no parts of poster which would be writing or photo as everything was done by using Photoshop.
All the effects were done in the Photoshop, they look like cartoon as I mentioned before in the text. The result of those effects is that people would think that this film is a comedy or melodrama. So in this case this poster works perfectly.
The colours used are: dark red/brown, orange, light green, violet and a bit of dark green. Those colours are made a bit dull. This might mean that this is more sort of love drama rather than comedy. The whole picture; people and colours would mean that something ironic or a bit sad would happen in the film.
There is no graphic furniture on the poster, but all writings could be related to graphic furniture as they are designed in cartoonish way.
The only one inspiration aspect I can see on this poster is that people are walking away from the picture. Author of this poster would be inspired of the film theme, so he decided to make those people going away from everything and in this case they are going from prospect with houses and some kind of town.
The poses of actors are walking towards the viewer and the facial motivation is happy, we can see this one their faces. The possible effect could be that film has got a happy ending, works like a hint to the audience to go and watch this film.
Marketing
This poster does inspire me to go and watch this film because of various reasons. First is that I relate to the particular group of audience that likes films with happy endings. Also I am related to the group of people who would enjoy abstract film, which will not be just comedy or melodrama. This poster looks unusual, so this will encourage me to watch the film.
This poster is successful in catching eyes by having a big peace of writing and having a cartoon picture on the front,-as most of the films have just an edited photo.
I think this poster has enough information to encourage people to watch this film as it has the name of the director; some people would buy it if they recognise the creator. It does not really has information about the narrative of the film as the slogan or name of the film gives quite a lot information ‘Away We Go’ about people who are going away from some kind of problems, as people might think about. The other information which will be quite useful for targeting audience is names of the actors, as someone might buy/watch this film because of favourite actors in it.
This poster does give me information about the genre of the film as this poster uses quite soft and bright colours, it also gives me information about narrative and idea of the film by the name written in front as I mentioned before.

Narrative
The basic idea of film is about war, and people who are trying to make their life on it. In this case it is reporter. The film is about a woman reporter who is in war place taking photos for her album. Woman is looking at people in war place and taking the photos and then she sees a running girl and decides to follow her. She goes towards her and hides behind the fence to take a photo of her. Then she sees that the girl men a soldier and that soldier point a gun at the girl, and asks to give what ever she has in her hand. Reporter at that time just watches the situation and takes photos. The arguments between man and the girl is getting more aggressive, soldier tries to get the bag from girls hands, at that point we see that girl looks at the reporter and reporter is shocked for a second, but then still carries on taking photos. The next shot we see that reporter prepares for the presentation of her photo of the girl, we see reporter/woman putting some make up and clothes on. We see reporter’s thoughts while she is dressing. After we see the point when reporter seats in the audience and waiting for her name to spoken out so she can get the price for the photo of the year she took. When a woman on stages tells reporter to come out and get the prize the photo of a dead girl appears on presentation board and reporter runs out from the hall crying. That is the moment when she understood what she has done.
The premise of a narrative is that woman/reporter was some kind of spectator of some one else’s death. That she did not help the little girl, even though she could and that little girl saw her taking the photo. The reporter is soulless person. That is what narrative tries to bring us.
Active question in the film is why reporter did not help that girl. As we watch this film and see that reporter is not helping, even though while she was taking photos she stopped for a moment looked at the girl they looked at each other, and then woman carried on to take pictures. In te end girl was dead.
Defining moment in this film is quite a difficult question because there is actually two of them. First one is when reporter and girl are looking at each other, we understand then that woman is not going to help as she is working with her camera, but we do not know what happened to girl next. After that in the end of the film we have another defining moment as we see what happened to the girl, eventually she got killed and reporter took a picture of the dead girl, we can see that reporter understood what she has done and run away from the theatre where she should have given a prise for this photo. So in this case we have a second defining moment as we find out what happened to the girl and that reporter understands what she has done now.
Audience should follow the story and be involved in the story. As audience does not know what happened to the girl until the end, which keeps audience being interested and being involved in the narrative until the end. Audience also gout taught how people should not behave in situations like that.
Character/Elements
The protagonist in the whole scene is a small girl, because first that she did not do anything wrong and second that she was killed by soldier. The antagonists are soldier and reporter. We understand that this soldier is antagonist from the beginning by stereotype, which is a gun AK-47 which is usually used in films to represent terrorists. Reporter is antagonist as well because she did not help little girl, also reporter understood that it would be better to help the girl when they looked at each other, which makes her very “strong” antagonist in this scene. The audience in the hall where prize should be given could also be antagonists because they choose this photo to be a winner and they did not care about that small girl being dead at war.
Soldier opposes small girl by shooting her. Reporter opposes girl by not helping her, by letting her die. And the audience in the hall are opposing this girl by choosing this video. For me it seems that people are soul less and that they do not care about other innocent people dying at war.
The result on the protagonist is that she is going to be killed and being used as an object to make something on.
The character trait of reporter is quite brave woman. We can see it when a man next to her calls her but she is not going away, but actually carries on taking photos and goes into the action (01:37m) is when she goes off and (01:33m) when man calls her.
The story is about brave woman which was selfish to people in war basically. So the way she was treated and opposed to a small girl related to narrative. Also the result on the small girl is quite obvious, and matches the narrative.
Point of view
There is a third party point of view mostly, of course there are some points of view of reporter to compare what she and we seeing. We also have a point of view of camera, i.e. we have an effect as we would take those photos.
The reason to have third party point of view is to show the whole story from the side and give a chance to see emotions of people. Reason to have camera point of view shots is to bring us feeling that we are there, and also give us possible thoughts of reporter.
We are given that ‘she’ is a hard working ambitious journalist who is working in very dangerous places, like the one we have seen in the film. We also know that she is not scared of war as every one was running in the scene except her. We are also given a background/persona of reporter that she has her career first. As we see that she did not help the girl, bit carried on with taking photos.
Style/tone
The narrative structure in this film could relate to the Todorov theory in some way. As in the beginning there is equilibrium; she is a reporter and doing a good thing (i.e. tells people what is going wrong in the world). The disruption in this case could be a small girl which she saw running towards her. Recognition that disorder has occurred’ could be that girl faced a soldier, who started to point gun at her. Instead of attempt of reappearing the and saving the girl; reporter stayed there and carried on taking photos because she was scared or because she wanted to take some more photos first, but girl dies before reporter saves her (we do not see how girl dies). The new equilibrium: girl dies and reporter can not forgive it to her self (runs out of place where she had to get her prize for the photo).
Film has some action of war so obviously style of it is war. There are a bit of shooting scene in the film and the whole situation is based around two people in it. One is trying to escape/save her self and the other person tries to take photos of it.
Editing in the film is quite fast especially in the moments when there is shooting actions and everyone is running. This camera style is matching the film style. As action is one of the major parts in the war. There were some camera shots that were framed with out of focus in front of the camera to give an impression that someone in war is hiding and watching the whole scene happening. This way of filming creates the style of film because in real people would hide from gun shots, and in the scene we see that from our point of view we are hiding and looking what is happening. This ‘framing’ shot is not appearing all the time as if it would we would not be able to concentrate on the film, instead of ‘framing’ through out the action scene we have ‘hand-held’ and ‘steady cam’ as it represents rushing scenes the most, it terms of feelings/emotions it gives and we can concentrate on the picture of film more.
The acting of actors is quite the same except the reporter, as she was the one who was not scared to run to film/take photo of girl. The soldier looked scared even though he had a gun, as maybe he was running away from something, that girl also looked scared and she was also was running away from somewhere, all people on the streets were running away from bullets and dangerous places because they were scared. Even friend/work mate was running away buy not the reporter. This all could give us feeling that she ‘is brave and ambitious woman who cares about her career, and it is actually true by the narrative.
The only on screen graphic in this scene is when reporter takes photos of the action happening. We can see how she takes shot, it is shown by making screen flashing and through the framing of the shots. It is all edited together very fast so it seems to us that we are in the camera’s point of view (starts at 01:20m).
Camera
There are many different shots in the film which represent some particular mood in scenes. First shot I would like to mention is: shot from behind, as I mentioned above it is probably made that way to give the audience feeling that woman was followed by someone else. In the same part we have tracking shots which are placed there to cut in time, which is actually more sort of editing which lets us know that she is preparing and it takes a long time. So we might think that she is preparing for something very important. In this case she is preparing for prize winning which could be very important life event. We also have some close ups on woman’s/reporter’s face to see her eyes, which could make audience focus on her eyes and make think that she is scared of something. After the calm section in woman’s apartment we move to the shooting action. The shot which is used in action section is: hand-held which is more sort of steadicam, the reason to place there this shot is to represent that it is real and that some one is actually filming it himself, rather it was filmed on purpose by professionals, gives to audience a real impression. There is a medium shot on to the soldier later on, it is made in the scene to introduce the soldier to the audience, if it would be extreme long shot or long shot we would net see him as one on the main characters and we would not see his face as well. As we want to see the emotions of main characters to understand what purposes they follow in the film and what their mood is. After we had medium shot on the soldier we then have a medium shot in the small girl which is running towards the camera, this shot is also introduces another character in the scene, so now we understand who is going to act in this scene, but we do not know yet what are they going to do. We can only guess what is going to happen by stereotypes: soldier has AK-47 so we think of him as a villain, small girl who is scared and has a small bag which is not a weapon, but probably toys or food. Finally we have reporter who seems to be a hero who will help the princess (small girl). In the end we have very different ending and the reason is that its short film which rarely gives information rather than telling a tale. All those shots are repeating for a while. We see how girl meets villain/soldiers we have two-shot here to show that they have met each other, and how hero comes closer. Then shoots are smoothly moving to the next part of the film when she is in concert hall for a prize which is also more part of editing, but this time we have a medium long shot, we have this shot in this place to first of all show where is she and that she is quite small and that she is merged in crowd. There are no aerial shots, lo-angle or high-angle shots because the whole scene meant to represent from the side and author might want the audience to see all heroes equal and decide them selves who is right and who is wrong. In the end we see medium shot on the reporter/woman crying after she realised what happened and what she has done. We se this shot to give this film an end because without this shot we would not know that this woman feels in the end, it would not explain people life. With this ending people might understand that in the end they will feel guilty and sad if we do similar thing to this, even though we do not realise it in the beginning.
As I mentioned above camera treats all characters the same, as we do not have any high-angle, low-angle or aerial shots. The whole film was supposed to represent every character from the side and leave a decision of the whole situation up to us.
Sound/music
There are both types of sounds diegetic and non-diegetic. There are some people talking, something shooting, and screaming. Also there is music in the end and in the middle.
The non diegetic sound is used in this scene only in most in most important parts. The one is around time when girl saw/met the soldier after that music is not stopping, but just goes lower. The second time music appears in the end when we have the conclusion of the film.
The non-diegetic sound only appears in moments of action in the war place, when we see reporter back to her house there is no non-diegetic sound but when wee see the end of the story i.e. the photo of a dead girl we have some kind of relaxing Middle East music, which represents calmness and in this case death, an end of someone’s life and the whole scene either.
Sound is related to the film as some moments in the film need concentration, those moments are: when we see that reporter understood what she has done and the moment when we see that reporter and girl looked at each other and reporter carried on taking photos.
Edit
There is over the shoulder shot in the beginning of the film. It is made there to intrigue audience, it looks like someone is watching her. Audience could think that ‘soul of dead’ is watching her going to go somewhere. We see her from the back all the time in the beginning, we also have a couple of close ups and tracking shots from different sides. This made to cut away time so we do not actually see the whole process of putting make up, we see it step by step, every time we see her, she does different steps of preparation. The other editing happens (01:06m) when we move to woman’s hands and then we jump to the war action. This could be a representation of tiny woman’s hands with a ring on it in different place made a crime as we see her holding camera which she was used. This could represent to the audience that she has done something wrong, and we can probably see what she is remembering as we have jump to the war action after close up on her eyes, where she looks ‘lost’.
Short Film Deconstruction, Film Name: (Black Hole)
Link for the film: (film name: Black Hole)
Narrative
Basic concept of the film is to show what greediness can do to ordinary people, like the one we have seen in the office. Film starts from the scene when there is a man in the office trying to print something, and this printer is not working for some reason. Then man/main hero kicks printer and it prints him a big black dot on A3 sheet of paper. Main hero looks at it and puts it on the side. Main hero finds out about magic use of this sheet with the black dot after he places an empty cup on it. After he realises what things could be done with this thing he starts to do things which he would not usually think about.
The premise of the film is to carry out to people that we are easily tempted. Quite a lot of people which would watch this film might work in office or in the similar organisation, and could be on his place, despite the fact that there is magic item in the film. In fact instead of a magic object in real fife there could be something instead and what makes sense.
Active question in the narrative might be: why people would need to steel something if they will be caught anyway. Even by something else like in the film. We could not say straight that there is a question, in my opinion it more sort of teaching because this film shows what could happen to someone if he/she steels, or in other words if people give up to their temptation.
The defining moment in the film is when main hero has done his first crime in the film, and thinking of something else he would steel, while he is greedily eating a chocolate bar-which he stole by using a magic item. From this point we could say that persona of a main hero is changed, he looks cruel now and we can see it in his eyes.
Audience should be involved in the process of interest through out the film. Whet main hero steals chocolate and money audience should think,-wow I would take more or I would keep it for tomorrow, or something like I would rather rub bank instead. In the end all illusions disappear in people as they see that this guy eventually got caught. This would give audience will not to steal even if they have a chance to do that. Also audience might be asked being worried for main character.
Character/Elements
There is no protagonist in the film because there is only one character and there is no one who could be his opposite. On the other hand we might say that he is a protagonist in the beginning and when he invents for him self a secret weapon he becomes antagonist, it happens in the scene within the defining moment, when he looks at the “door”
Even though there are no antagonists and protagonists we could still relate those characteristics to non animated bits of the film. In the first bit in the scene antagonist would be a black dot because it incite main hero to steel, even though it does not say anything it “just lies down there”, but we know that without black dot main hero would not steel.
In the end main hero who used to be a protagonist is locking him self in the money locker which it partly his fault and mainly of the black dot. The protagonist will be sent to prison that is the result of the antagonist on the protagonist.
Main character is greedy and that is probably the main trait of him. When main character starts to steal money from the locker he takes just small part of money first thinks about it or being shocked. Then goes for more until he can not reach for money, and then he climbs inside and the print falls off. His characteristic was greediness, and in this scene he was punished for it as he would stop stealing by taking just small part of it but he did not.
As this film takes more sort of teaching position this trait of the main hero is fully related to the theme and narrative of the story. By the example of the main hero narrative explains why this happened to that person, who seems to be a protagonist in the beginning. People see straight away that greediness is bad and the fact that greedy people could be punished in the end.
Point of view
Point of view in this film is entirely from the audience. As we watch this scene we almost see main hero from the side. All emotions and situation of the scene we could see from the side and be taught.
Point of view shifts to the main hero just once. The place where it shifts is defining moment; we have the point of view shot to make us see what main hero sees. It made like that on purpose so audience can see what he sees when he looks at the door to the room with money locker. Audience will know that there is something more important than chocolate.
We have enough information about main hero due to stereotypes such as: he is an office worker (white shirt standard tie, staying late probably no personal life) this kind of person will dream about big amount of money, but will never get them by working in the office and he understands it. the other source which gives us information is that the whole scene filmed with some kind of blue tint, it gives impression of boring night in the office, also printer does not work and we can see that this fact annoys main hero the most at the moment, we can see that he is moaning and that he is tired.
Style/tone
The narrative in this film is to explain the fact what could happen to people who was yield to temptation by something/someone especially when people are mentally weak and can not control themselves.
The visual style in this video is some king of teaching example. It moralizes us what we should not do. You can relate this video to folk tales.
We kind of see main hero from the side and this will give us a teaching moment, we see how we should not behave in our life. So camera style in this case affects created style in the positive way.
The acting of the actor/main hero made it typical, as scene means that quite a lot of people would behave like that if such tool was founded. So his acting related to the style of narrative.
Camera
There is a small crane shot which is then becomes medium close up on the main hero. By making the crane shot we have a background of the place and we understand straight away that scene is in the office. MCU which is medium close up gives an impression of the main hero; he looks tired and angry. After main hero prints something we have a close up on the sheet of paper he has printed. This shot is there to make audience understand that the action in the film began, as something weird happened. In some point wee see that he/main hero puts his sheet of paper next to the printer and gets something to drink. When main hero drinks a cup of water we can see a worm’s shot from under the black dot (00:49s) of the film, this shot is called: framing, it is used there to create a thought to the audience that something very unusual is going to happen. The main hero puts his cup on this sheet of paper and it disappears, then we see him looking at the printed paper and the shot there is framing from under thee paper again, so the audience can see what emotions main hero has on his face. Later on when he understands what could be done with this paper we have an eye line match to the food machine (01:23m), he does not say anything but we understand that as camera points at it. When he is standing next to the machine and has the sheet of paper placed against the glass we have a close up on his hand, so audience finally understands what exactly could be done with this paper. Also this is a breakpoint moment in the film (when he starts to steal). When he stole a chocolate we have a close up on his face, and we can see that he looks impertinent and we can see that he is searching for something else to steal. Straight after that we have an eye line match on the door where is money locker locked (we do not know this yet here) audience would think that there is something more serious because of the look of the main hero. After he opened up the room, he places the print on the wall of the money locker, and on this place we have a close up on how he places the paper. Ha placed paper on a small bit of scotch tape, and author made a close up there to give audience a hint of what is going to happen. After we have some close ups on main hero and pile of money he created. Close ups on his face are made to express the feelings of him and close ups on money to see how greedy is main hero. In the end we again have a close up on the small bit of scotch tape and wee see that hint we have been given was right as this sheet of paper falls off. The last two shots are: long shot (LS) and extreme long shot (XLS) of the locker to represent that he is alone inside and no one is going to help him, as on the XLS we can see again that there is no one else in the office.
The camera gives us quite a lot of close ups on the main hero, this I would calla camera treatment to the main hero always expresses his emotions.
Sound/music
There are two types of sounds one is diegetic sound which happens through out the scene and non diegetic sound which happens is certain parts of the scene, like when some sort of action is happening to the print with the black dot.
When main hero touches or does an action to the print a sound effect happens. The other sound effect would be when we hear sound of printer in the end, printers are usually quite in the big room as sound is spread out the room equally, but here we can hear printer very loud. It can give an impression that office is so empty and quite that you even hear this printer louder that usually. The other reason for this could be that when we are getting out from the money locker printer gets louder so we ca not hear the knocks from the main hero, which also gives us expression that no one will hear and rescue him.
Sound happens all the time when audience needed to be concentrated to the print. The important moment would be when hero puts the cup on the paper and cup disappears-in this moment special effect is happened. So sound relates to the whole story as the print is one of the most important things in the narrative.
Edit
The whole film is based on the print which was made. First part is when main hero just working and he is not in the mood to do any work at all. The second part of the film is when he finds out about this magic paper and starts to steal food and money. In the end he locks himself by mistake because of this paper as well.
This paper related to sounds in the scene, as when main hero tries to touch it or does with it any manipulations the special sound appears.
The edit with paper and its magic characteristic is related to the narrative because the whole scene is based on this paper.
Edit changes are not fast and frequent. Edits are changing in places where it is needed; example of this could be when we have an eye line match or point of view of the magic paper. Only in the end we have quite fast editing, when the main hero steals money from the locker, edits are made fast to represent that main hero in agony and nervous and wants to take money as fast as possible.
